Major blow to Chelsea as man united remover another barrier to courtious joining real Madrid

Friday, 23 February 2018

Thibaut Courtois is set to become Real Madrid's number one target in goal this summer as David De Gea closes in on a new contract at Manchester United.

Chelsea have been frustrated in their attempts to tie the Belgian down to an extended deal of his own with the 25-year-old having already talked up his chances of one day returning to the Spanish capital.

He spent three seasons on loan at Atletico Madrid from the Blues during which time he won the Spanish title, the Copa del Rey, Europa League and reached the final of the Champions League and his family are still based in the Spanish capital.

Antonio Conte has pleaded with the Chelsea hierarchy to do all that they can to keep the goalkeeper who he believes could come to overtake Gianluigi Buffon as the greatest player of his era in his position.

Courtois replaced De Gea between the sticks at Atletico after the Spaniard left the club to join United in 2011 as the long-term successor to Edwin van der Sar at Old Trafford.

Yet after collecting his second Premier League winners' medal last year, the Chelsea shot-stopper has told his club he wants to see his wages reflect his dominance over the division and bring in a bigger pay packet.

De Gea is already the best paid goalkeeper in the English topflight and according to the Times he has agreed to sign a new contract with the club that would give his income another boost to further pull away from Courtois.

Real want to replace Costa Rica international Keylor Navas with a more highly-rated player in goal and the reigning European and Spanish champions have long admired the talent in the Premier League.

If United are to confirm that their shot-stopper is ready to extend his stay in Manchester until at least 2021 then Madrid will have to focus their efforts on trying to sign the Chelsea man, and given his connection to Spain that should be an understandable source of worry for the Blues.

Had it not been for a faulty fax machine, De Gea would have moved to Real in 2015 yet he stayed at Old Trafford now stands to be rewarded with a fresh £220,000 deal.
