Manchester United star move to serial A giant

Saturday, 3 March 2018

Manchester United have been dealt a blow in pursuit of AC Milan’s Alessio Romagnoli, with the Italian defender in talks over a new contract at the San Siro, reports Sky Italy.

United manager Jose Mourinho is looking to strengthen the defense this summer, with Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind and Chris Smalling potentially leaving the club, but Romagnoli’s future could well remain in Italy given his latest comments. Renewal? It depends on me. My current contract expires in 2020 and the renewal I can earn with the matches and performances, and then it will be the task of the managing director Rossonero Fassone and my attorney Sergio Berti to take care of my future,” he said.

The 23-year-old, who joined Milan from AS Roma in 2015, has made 21 Serie A appearances this season. The Rossoneri are currently seventh in the table, seven points adrift of fourth-placed Inter Milan, having conceded 30 goals in 26 games.

Despite Romagnoli lining up alongside Leonardo Bonucci at the heart of the defense, Milan has leaked goals this season. Nevertheless, he doesn’t appear keen to leave, instead of looking to commit his future, which is bad news for United. Mourinho would have to pay in excess of £25m to land to the 23-year-old, who spent a year at Sampdoria on loan in 2015. He’s made five appearances for the Italian national team. TalkSPORT says Chelsea and Barcelona are also keen on the defender’s signature, with the Blues having approached Romagnoli last summer, but it appears he will stay at Milan for the time being.
